Jonathan Spivey is a classically trained American actor based in New York City. Television appearances include “The Gilded Age,” “FBI: Most Wanted,” “The Blacklist,” “WeCrashed,” “Blue Bloods,” and “East New York.” Jonathan appeared in the recent feature A Complete Unknown starring Timothée Chalamet and the upcoming feature Paradise directed by Daniel Byers.
Jonathan originated the role of Professor Plum in the first national tour of Clue. Broadway credits include The Front Page opposite Nathan Lane and John Goodman, and James Lapine’s Tony Award winning Act One opposite Tony Shalhoub and Santino Fontana at Lincoln Center, later televised for PBS. Off Broadway appearances include Morning’s at Seven opposite Tony Roberts and Patty McCormack, Summer and Smoke opposite Marin Ireland, the New York premiere of Smart Blonde opposite Andréa Burns, and King of the Jews opposite Richard Topol. He plays Sonny in Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption II.
Jonathan has performed regionally at Yale Repertory Theatre, the Denver Center, Long Wharf, Barrington Stage Company, The Old Globe, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, The Repertory Theatre of St Louis, Syracuse Stage, Geva Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Cape Playhouse, and Virginia Repertory Theatre in plays by Shakespeare, Williams, Miller, and Stoppard as well as world premieres by emerging playwrights. He has also enjoyed appearances in both new and established musicals.
He received his Master of Fine Arts in classical acting at The Old Globe in San Diego where he appeared in Pam MacKinnon’s critically acclaimed production of Death of a Salesman opposite Jeff DeMunn and As You Like It, The Tempest, and Richard III all directed by former Royal Shakespeare Company Artistic Director Adrian Noble. During his studies, he was awarded a Craig Nowell Fellowship.
An accomplished playwright, Jonathan’s wrote the scripts for Poor White Moron and Rodgersandhart. With frequent collaborator Anand Nagraj, Jonathan also co-wrote the play Talmadge & Ray and the musical Murphy’s Law. Jonathan has played the piano for over thirty years and is originally from Windsor, Virginia.
